PM Modi to Address Lok Sabha Amid Heated Motion of Thanks Debate in Budget Session
New Delhi — The ongoing Budget Session of Parliament has reached a pivotal moment as Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to address the Lok Sabha today in response to the Motion of Thanks on President Droupadi Murmu’s address to a joint sitting of both Houses. The Lok Sabha has allotted 18 hours for the discussion, which serves as a constitutional exercise to acknowledge the President’s address and debate the government’s priorities.

The Motion of Thanks — moved in the Lok Sabha by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and seconded by Tejasvi Surya — is part of the session that commenced on January 28 and will continue till April 2 with an intervening recess. In the Rajya Sabha, BJP MP Sadanand Master moved the motion.
However, the proceedings have been far from smooth. Tensions escalated earlier this week with opposition benches staging repeated protests and disruptions, leading to the suspension of eight opposition MPs for unruly conduct during the debate. The clashes underscored deep divisions on key issues — including national policy and procedural fairness — with Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi raising concerns over speaking time and parliamentary conduct.
Amid this backdrop, political observers across party lines are closely tracking Mr. Modi’s address, as he is expected to clearly outline the government’s stance on issues raised in the President’s speech and present its legislative and economic roadmap for the year ahead.
