Sri Lankan Navy Arrests 15 Indian Fishermen

Rameswaram: The navy of Sri Lanka arrested 15 Indian fishermen on Tuesday for allegedly poaching in their waters. According to police, the navy arrested them for fishing in Lankan waters near Katchatheevu and taken them to Talaimannar coast with their three boats.

It is learnt that the last evening, nearly 734 boats had went for fishing and they had crossed the territory due to poor availability of fish. The Lankan navy surrounded the three boats, that had crossed over, and arrested them. The boats were owned by Kudbuddin, Nizamudin and Britto.

Though they had right to dry their nets in the island, fishermen were not allowed near Katchatheevu according to the agreement under which the islet was ceded to Sri Lankan by India in 1974.
