Trump Announces One-Week Pause in Russian Strikes on Ukraine
In a surprising development in the nearly four-year-long Russia-Ukraine war, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to pause attacks on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv and other cities for one week due to extreme winter conditions and humanitarian concerns.

Speaking at a White House Cabinet meeting, Trump said he personally requested Putin halt strikes on Kyiv and nearby towns as temperatures plunge and Russian bombardments have cut off power and heat for many civilians. “I personally asked President Putin not to fire on Kyiv and the cities and towns for a week during this extraordinary cold,” Trump stated, adding that Putin agreed — though no official confirmation has yet come from Moscow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the initiative, calling it a positive step that could protect lives during the region’s harshest winter in years. Kiev has struggled with widespread energy outages, leaving residents vulnerable to freezing temperatures.
However, continued Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure and energy systems — including recent strikes in southern and central Ukraine — underscored the fragility of any temporary lull in fighting. Ukraine and its Western partners are now preparing for renewed peace talks, involving U.S., Russian, and Ukrainian officials, aiming to build on this potential ceasefire and explore longer-term conflict resolution measures.
Critics argue that without formal confirmation from Moscow and verifiable implementation, the week-long pause remains uncertain. Still, the announcement highlights growing international concern over civilian suffering in Ukraine’s brutal winter and renewed diplomatic efforts to ease hostilities.
