Yakub Memon the convict of Bombay bomb blast 1993 was hanged in the early hours today at Nagpur Central Jail. After his death, the body was taken to autopsy by a special team of Nagpur.
Yakub was hanged at 6.35 a.m. and a medical team pronounced him dead a short while later. Yakub’s family demanded for the dead body of Yakub Memon.
“The family would not be allowed to take out procession and the funeral will have to be kept a low key affair. The last rites will have to be performed within the stipulated time…there should be no construction on the grave,” a top official said.
Yakub’s brother Suleman and cousin Usman, who were camping in city since yesterday, received the body which was being flown to Mumbai.
The last meeting between Yakub and family was understandably an emotional affair. While the family members could not control their emotions, Yakub – who appeared somewhat shaken then – tried to maintain his composure and consoled them.
“They were left inside the room, but under watch,” the sources said.
