On Tuesday night, an encounter ensued in Nagaland which claimed the lives of one army officer and three militants. The incident occurred in Tijit area near Lappa of Mon district. It is 340 km north of the Kohima state.

Apart from the dead, three soldiers were gravely injured and a civilian died in the gun battle. The Army has, however, refused to confirm the death of a civilian. The militants, according to reports, belonged to the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) and the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent.)

Lt. Col Chiranjeet Konwer, the Army spokesperson speaking to a popular news daily said, “The incident took place around 10 P.M. Based on information about the movement of terrorists the officer, and his team went to the area when they were ambushed and an encounter ensued.” He added, “The encounter is over and combing operations are underway.”

In the recent past, several attacks on security forces have been carried out by the operatives of NSCN-K. Two years ago, rebels from the same group ambushed and killed eight rifle jawans near the Myanmar border in Mon district of Nagaland.
