13 killed after migrant boat capsizes off Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur: As many as 13 people were killed on Thursday when a boat sank in the Malacca Strait, Malaysia. According to officials, the small rickety wooden boat was carrying 70 Indonesian migrants when the mishap took place.

According to local head of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Mohamad Aliyas Hamdan, the boat capsized off the western coast of Malaysia near Sauh Cape close to the coastal town of Sabak Bernam in central Selangor state. The official also added that the local fishermen have rescued nearly 13 people and fished out 13 bodies.

The official said that the fishermen told them that based on the size of the boat, it could be carrying 100 people. He added that the search operation is underway. The officials have deployed 12 ships, a plane and nearly 200 officers to search the missing migrants. Investigation is underway and further details are still awaited.
