Emergency Declared in Florida and Puerto Rico as Hurricane Irma Intensifies

Hurricane Irma has gotten stronger over the weekend becoming a Category 4 storm on Monday afternoon. The storm churning West in the Atlantic Ocean has resulted in declaring an emergency in Florida and Puerto Rico.

Irma’s path is not certain but it is likely to hit the United States. The Governor of Florida, Rick Scott declared an emergency in all the 67 counties in his state to avoid a repeat of Hurricane Harvey where no emergency was declared.

On Monday Scott released a statement, “In Florida, we always prepare for the worst and hope for the best, and while the exact path of Irma is not absolutely known at this time, we cannot afford to not be prepared.”

He further added, “This state of emergency allows our emergency management officials to act swiftly in the best interest of Floridians without the burden of bureaucracy or red tape.”

Governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rosselló also declared a state of emergency. The release from the Governor stated that the National Guard was activated. The Governor also warned citizens that Irma’s wrath would be felt on Wednesday afternoon.

The Hurricane Center listed a number of Caribbean islands under Hurricane warning, Antigua, Barbuda, Anguilla, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis, Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Martin/Sint Maarten and St. Barts.

Experts have reported that Hurricane Irma will only get worse this week as it enters warmer waters helping it to intensify.

Irma is a Cape Verde Hurricane which is known to turn into terrifying and disastrous hurricanes like Hurricane Hugo and Hurricane Floyd.
