Five Indians in BBC’s 100 influential women

BBC unveiled its chosen list of inspirational women for 2016 today. The 100 globally chosen women are selected from different fields, high-profiles and are influential women from all corners of the world. This year saw an increase of entrepreneurs, engineers, sportswomen, business women, fashion icons, and artists than ever before.

This list also includes five Indians- Bollywood actress Sunny Leone,

Sunny Leone

Born Karenjit Kaur Vohra, Sunny Leone,35, worked as an Adult star before entering Bollywood. An active member of PETA and now a part of mainline cinema she has appeared in over 12 Bollywood films in various roles and cameos. She is also the first Indian actress to walk on NYFW for Archana Kochhar create awareness of the initiative ‘Bring Beauty Back’.

Mallika Srinivasan,

Also known as ‘Tractor Woman of India’, Mallika Srinivasan,57, is the Chief Executive Officer of Tractors and Farm Equipment limited. She is on the Board of AGCO Corporation – United States, Tata Steel Limited, and Tata Global Beverages Limited. She is also a member of the Executive Board of the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad and the Governing Board of the Indian Institute of Technology,Chennai.

Neha Singh, a 34-year-old actor, and writer founded a movement to encourage women to walk the streets in Mumbai to defy harassment.

Saalumarada Thimmakka,

An Indian environmentalist,105, from Karnataka, is mainly known for her work in planting and tending to 384 banyan trees along a four-kilometre stretch of highway between Hulikal and Kudur. A U.S. environmental organization based in Los Angeles and Oakland, California called Thimmakka’s Resources for Environmental Education is named after her.

One of the first children in India to experience School in The Cloud(SOLE), in her village in Maharashtra. Eight years down the lane, now 20, she is working on her Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering at the SSPM’s College of Engineering in Kankavali, part of Mumbai University.

This year’s list included some of the eminent and influential personalities like Alicia Keys, Shirin Gerami, a triathlete, Simone Biles, Olympic Gymnast and more. The list included women of all ages who are not only survivors but also achievers.
