Iran’s former President Rafsanjani passes away.

On Sunday, Iran’s former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani passed away after a decades long career as an elite member of the country. Rafsanjani who is famous for his cunning tactics was not very famous for his moderate ideology. His behavior got him through war and politics alike. The president was alive for the most part of the Iran’s modern history, from being a close aide to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in the Islamic Revolution to acting as a mediator in the Iran-Contra deal, he was an important part of most events. He also was a part of founding Iran’s contested nuclear program which was later limited in exchange for sanctions relief from the G5 countries.

Mourners can pay their respect to the former President Rafsanjani as the country observes three days of mourning period. The leader passed away after a heart attack on Sunday at the age of 82.
