Israel’s latest election has left the country facing an uncertain political future. The results could shape who leads the government and how the country’s main political groups work together.
Exit polls reported by Israeli news networks Kan 11 and Channel 13 suggest that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc and the opposition bloc each won around 51 seats. Neither side appears close to the 61 seats needed for a majority in Israel’s 120-seat parliament.
Netanyahu’s Likud Party is projected to become the largest single party, with around 27 seats. Arab-led parties are projected to hold about 18 seats, making their support important in possible talks to form a government.
Both Netanyahu and his main rival, Gadi Eisenkot, have said they want to form the next government. However, disagreements over possible alliances could make the process difficult.
Final results are expected in the coming days. Political leaders may need to negotiate with other parties to secure enough support. If they cannot reach an agreement, Israel could face another election.
