South African cricketer J. P. Duminy broke a record after the all-rounder scored 37 runs in just one over. During a one day domestic match between the Knights and Cape Cobras. Duminy part of the Cape Cobras shocked the leg spinner Eddie Leie who bowled the over on Wednesday.
Duminy scored 5 sixes in the over and managed to get a free ball after Eddie bowled a no bowl. The extra ball to Eddie’s surprise went rolling past the boundary. The Knights who batted first scored 239 and the Cobras were 208 for 2 in the 36th over.
Duminy took the second spot under Zimbabwe’s Elton Chigumbura for the maximum runs in an over in a List A career. Chigumbura remains undefeated at the first spot after he scored 39 runs in one over against Bangladesh’s Alauddin Babu during the Chaka Premier League in 2013.
After the match, Duminy was quoted saying, “It is not every day you get the opportunity, so of course I was trying to go for the six sixes in an over.”
The all-rounder further added, “I initially thought it was all about the bonus point. I looked up at the scoreboard and we needed 35 with four overs still to go to get the bonus point, so I just decided to take Eddie on. I was striking the ball really cleanly, and when the first two went for six, I figured I might as well give it a full go now because regardless whether I get out we would still have secured the bonus point. It was enjoyable.”
The Knights won the toss and decided to bat first. Even though Patrick Kruger from the Knights managed to score a century it was not enough to get the team to victory. After 50 overs the Knights scored 239/9 and Duminy managed to reach the 240 target by the 36th over.
