Technology was created to facilitate human interactions, not finish them. In the world where we bless technology for bringing us closer to people on the opposite side of the world, we are not able to bond with the ones right in front of us. Such a tragedy is even more so if it results in dire consequences.
A woman in china was completely oblivious to the fact that her baby was drowning as she sent emojis on her phone. The mother-son duo were in a swimming pool when the unfortunate incident happened. As shown in the clip below that was captured on the building’s CCTV camera, the lady was texting on her phone, with her back to the child, as the latter tried to stay afloat to save his life. What was even shocking was that the mother just wandered off aimlessly once she was done with her texting still not paying attention to her infant.
The Child Accident Prevention Trust has often issued warnings to keep the children safe in pools especially as they can drown silently in as little as 5cm of water. One of the citizens, Noman Zafar, added that “Phones should not be allowed to parents/guardians accompanied by kids in the pool area. So they can stay focus on kids.”
It is really saddening to see that even such basic measures have to be told to people to protect their children from calamities. Gone are the days when there were messages asking people to stop using technology for a second and enjoy the world outside. Times are more desperate now. Such lapses into technology are costing lives. People are trying to capture a perfect moment and put a filter on it rather than enjoy it for what it is. If this isn’t controlled, we might too get sucked into and drown in the pool of technology like the poor child.
