On Thursday, President Barack Obama expressed his views and advised President-Elect Donald Trump to take his job and responsibilities seriously. During a press conference in Berlin, Obama said, “What I said to him was, what may work in generating enthusiasm or passion during elections may be different from what will work in terms of unifying the country and gaining the trust of those who didn’t support him.”
Obama spoke about the responsibilities and urged his successor to take the job earnestly which will help unify the country. President Obama said, “If you’re not serious about the job, you probably won’t be there very long,” He further added, “He will see fairly quickly, the demands and responsibilities of a U.S. president are not ones that you can treat casually. That in a big, complex, diverse country, the only way you can be successful is by listening, reaching out and working with a wide variety of people.”
Trump took his instructions and showed his keenness to understand what President Obama had to share. Mr. Obama further added saying, “He’s indicated his willingness, his understanding of that. That has to reflect in not only what he says but how he fills out his administration.” Advising his successor he also suggested the President-Elect to switch from a stringent campaign line and set a right character during the transformation process.
The President spoke this during his farewell tour to Europe. He was in Germany, along with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, during the speech wherein he also emphasized the importance of diplomatic foreign relations. “My hope is that’s something he’s thinking about, because not only is the President of the United States somebody the entire country looks to for direction, but sets the agenda internationally in a lot of ways.” said Obama. And contrary to the Republicans comments on the campaign trail, President Obama believes Trump is committed to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO.)
Meanwhile Trump is in the process of deciding who will fill his cabinet level positions and take control of government after Obama’s term comes to an end in January. Trump’s staffing decisions have come under criticism after scores of congressional Democrats called on to Trump to part ways with Steve Bannon, the new White House Chief Strategist and also the Executive Chairman of Breitbart News.
With the controversial win Trump is indeed under much scrutiny and media attention. Only time will tell if President-Elect Donald Trump adheres to the advice of President Obama and if Obama’s newly found faith in Trump is justified.
