Second Earthquake In Solomon Islands.

On Friday an earthquake of 7.7 magnitude hit offshore the Solomon Islands archipelago. Tremors were felt and a tsunami warning was issued which was later canceled. On Saturday another earthquake of 6.9 magnitude shook the islands again. It is believed to be an aftershock of yesterday’s earthquake.

The U.S. Geological Survey said that the epicenter of the quake was 90 kilometers west of Kirakira, which is a provincial capital in Solomon Island archipelago. Officials said a tsunami warning is not expected. The earthquake that hit at 6:10 A.M., was offshore to the west of Solomon Islands and at a 10 kilometers depth. The officials also said there are no casualties or damages expected.

The Solomon Island archipelago, located to the west Australia is prone to regular earthquakes as is located on the edge of a tectonic plate, is in the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, which keeps a record of all the activity in the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’ said that there was no threat of a tsunami.
