Hurricanes are no joke and all though many nature enthusiasts find it amazing it can be quite devastating. Here, we are listing out the deadliest and most destructive hurricanes that have shaken this world.

10. Hurricane Andrew: In August 1992, a Category 5 Atlantic hurricane came crashing into the Bahamas and Florida.  Hurricane Andrew caused a lot of damage in the Bahamas and Louisiana but the most damage was done in South Florida. The hurricane destroyed 63,500 homes and damaged more than 124,000 houses. The hurricane also resulted in 65 people losing their lives and a total financial damage of $ 26.5 billion.

9. Hurricane Hugo: Hurricane Hugo was a Cape Verde type hurricane that caused massive damage in the Leeward islands, Puerto Rico and the Southeast of American. The hurricane claimed the lives of 34 people in the Caribbean and 27 in South Carolina in September 1989. The damages cost $10 billion making it the costliest hurricane at that time.

8. Hurricane Sandy: The deadliest and destructive hurricane of 2012 was Hurricane Sandy. Sandy was a Category 3 hurricane at its peak and made landfall in Cuba. Hurricane Sandy claimed the lives of 233 people in eight countries. The total damage cost was estimated at $75 billion and only Hurricane Katrina has beaten it.

7. Hurricane Camille: Hurricane Camille struck the United States in 1969. Camille reached a Category 2 before hitting the western part of America on 15th August. Camille went on to intensify into a Category 5 hurricane traveling towards Louisiana and Mississippi. The Hurricane struck Waveland in Mississippi with a pressure of 900 mbar. Camille in total killed 259 people and caused a financial damage of $1.42 billion.

6. Hurricane Gilbert: In the year 1988 during Atlantic Hurricane season a Category 5 hurricane named Gilbert caused widespread damage to the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. The hurricane caused havoc for nine days and killed 327 people and cost $7.1 billion for damages.

5. Labor Day Hurricane: The Labour Day Hurricane of 1935 is considered the third most intense Atlantic hurricane ever. It was a Category 5 hurricane hitting the Bahamas and the Southwest of the United States. The labor day hurricane claimed the lives of 409 people with winds blowing at 185 mph.

 

4. Hurricane Katrina: The deadliest hurricane to hit the United States was the hurricane named Katrina. In the year 2005, Katrina was recorded as a Category 5 hurricane making its first landfall in Hallandale Beach and Aventura and the further moving towards the Gulf of Mexico. The hurricane caused damage in Louisiana, Cuba, Florida, Mississippi, Alabama and the Bahamas. Hurricane Katrina killed 1,245 people and caused a total of $108 billion in property damage.

Hurricane Galveston: This was a Category 4 hurricane that affected areas of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Texas, Illinois, Louisiana, Florida, Mississippi, New York, Michigan, Wisconsin, Eastern Canada and Florida. The hurricane began in August 1990 claiming the lives of around 12,000 people with a total damage of $21 million in the year 1990.

2. Hurricane Mitch: In October 1998 Mitch formed in the Caribbean sea. The hurricane was recorded as a Category 5 hurricane at it peak affected Central American, Yucatán Peninsula, and Jamaica. Mitch claimed the lives of 9086 people and a total damage cost of $6.2 billion.

1. Great Hurricane of 1780: This hurricane also known as the Great Hurricane of the Antilles is the deadliest Atlantic hurricane recorded. The exact number is not recorded but around 22,000 people died due to the damage caused by the hurricane. The specifics of the hurricane are unavailable as the Atlantic hurricane database goes back only till 1851. The great hurricane of 1780 hit Barbados, Martinique, Saint Lucia and Sint Eustatius.
