Police on Tuesday transferred the missing case of Jawaharlal Nehru University student Najeeb Ahmad to the Central Bureau of Investigation. The Delhi High Court decided on the shift on the basis the Delhi police was wasting time.

27 year old, Najeeb Ahmad, a student of the University’s School of Biotechnology went missing on October 15th, 2016. Najeeb went missing after an on campus fight allegedly with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members, a night before.

Fatima Nafees, mother of Najeeb approached the high court concerning the news the Delhi police were not making efforts to find her son.

The Delhi police reported they had no issues with the case being transferred to the CBI. The Justices G.S. Sistani and Rekha Palli, were behind the transfer of the case with immediate effect. The court instructed the CBI to task a senior police officer with a deputy inspector general rank to supervise the investigation.

A special investigation team was set up by the Delhi police to track down Ahmad last year. After running out of luck the police transferred the case to the Crime Branch. The police even sent out a Rs. 10 lakh reward for any information regarding Ahmad.

During the hearing on Tuesday, the court lashed out at the police and said they were wasting time and public money, “One way or the other we want an answer. If he is dead, say he is dead. We won’t accept the paperwork. Do whatever you have to. Find him.”

The Judges further said, “If today it is Najeeb, tomorrow it could be anybody, just because he belongs to some other community or a political body.”
