
Prayagraj: A tragic stampede at the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj claimed the lives of 30 devotees late last night, while 60 others sustained injuries. According to Mahakumbh DIG Vaibhava Krishna, the incident occurred between 1 AM and 2 AM due to barricade failures at one or two locations. He confirmed that 25 of the deceased have been identified, while efforts are underway to identify the remaining five.
Authorities have assured that the situation is now under control, and no VIP visits were permitted to the Kumbh Mela today. A helpline number (1920) has been issued for further assistance.
Government Announces Ex-Gratia for Victims
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced a compensation of ₹25 lakh for the families of the deceased. The state government has appointed a judicial commission to investigate the cause of the stampede, with Chief Secretary and DGP expected to visit Prayagraj if necessary.
Four Victims from Karnataka Identified
Officials confirmed that four of the deceased were from Belagavi, Karnataka, including a mother and daughter. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced ₹2 lakh compensation for each affected family. A team of senior officials has been dispatched to Prayagraj to facilitate the return of the bodies.
