Bhopal: In a tragic incident, another cheetah has died in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park, bringing the total number of cheetahs in the park down to 24. The deceased cheetah, named Pawan, was a male brought from Namibia as part of the Indian government’s ambitious ‘Project Cheetah’ initiative, aimed at reintroducing the species to the country.
Officials from Kuno National Park reported that Pawan was found lying motionless in the bushes around 10:30 AM on Tuesday. Upon being informed, veterinary doctors rushed to the scene to examine the cheetah. Initial findings suggest that Pawan died due to drowning, as the front part of his body was found submerged in water. The officials noted that there were no visible injuries on the body, but the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem report is completed.
This unfortunate incident comes just weeks after the death of a five-month-old cheetah cub, born to an African cheetah named Gamini, on August 5. The recent deaths have raised concerns about the survival and well-being of the reintroduced cheetah population in Kuno National Park.
