Early this morning, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati Das came in support of the Congress party with an aim to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.) This move by the BSP will help the Congress party achieve the majority seat mark in the Madhya Pradesh (MP) Legislative Assembly.

The BSP did not perform similar to the Congress party and the BJP in MP, but holds the key to Government formation in MP. The Congress party and the BJP scored 114 and 109 seats respectively, whereas the BSP secured 2 seats in the MP Assembly elections.

The majority seat mark in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly is 116 and none of the parties were able to achieve it. The Congress party fell short of just 2 seats to touch the majority mark.

While addressing the press today, Mayawati said, the BSP would pledge an alliance with the Congress in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, despite the fact she didn’t concur with the party’s approaches and policies.

“We have decided to support the Congress in Rajasthan as well. We fought these elections to ensure that the BJP does not come back to power,” said Mayawati. She said, though the Congress party controlled the majority of the states in India, yet the local parties rose since the former was not working for the wellbeing of the people.

Mayawati further added, “Our aim is to keep the BJP out of power. And that is why we have decided to support the Congress in Madhya Pradesh.” Initially, Mayawati refused to form any sort of alliance, but in the wake of the election results, she is determined to keep BJP at bay.

Following Mayawati’s announcement, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav also expressed his desire to enter into an alliance with the Congress party.
