Hyderabad: The Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad has reached a significant milestone by performing 1,000 kidney transplants over the past ten years. This achievement is unmatched by any other government hospital in India. Notably, these transplants were conducted free of cost under the Arogyashri and Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF), benefiting poor and middle-class patients who couldn’t afford private treatments.
Of the kidney transplants, 60% were from live donors, while the remaining 40% came from brain-dead donors. The first kidney transplant at NIMS was performed in 1989, and since then, the hospital has completed 1,780 successful surgeries. With the formation of the Jeevandan Trust, the number of transplants has increased significantly. Prof. Dr. Rahul Devaraj, Head of the Urology Department, credited the dedicated NIMS medical team for making 1,000 transplants possible in the last decade.
Praise from CM and Health Minister
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Health Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha, and NIMS Director Birappalu congratulated the doctors, including Professors Rahul Devaraj, Rama Reddy, and their team, for their outstanding achievement. They expressed hope for continued success.
Early Detection Saves Lives
Prof. Dr. Rahul Devaraj advised that early detection of kidney issues is crucial in saving lives, as the number of people suffering from kidney problems is rising each year.
