Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, 79, checked into Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi on Monday evening for medical observation, with hospital and party sources confirming the development on Tuesday. The veteran politician remains stable and responsive to treatment under careful medical supervision.

Doctors admitted Sonia Gandhi after she experienced respiratory discomfort linked to a chronic cough and a mild flare-up of bronchial asthma. Physicians said Delhi’s cold weather and high pollution levels likely triggered the condition, as such factors commonly irritate the lungs, particularly in older adults.
Hospital sources emphasized that the admission was precautionary rather than an emergency intervention. A chest specialist is overseeing her treatment, while doctors continue routine assessments and provide supportive care. An official statement said her condition remains absolutely stable, and the medical team will decide her discharge timeline based on her recovery over the next few days.
This is not Gandhi’s first health-related hospital visit; in recent years, she has made periodic medical visits for check-ups, particularly during periods of fluctuating weather and pollution spikes in the capital.
Despite her stay in hospital, Congress leaders say there is no cause for public concern. Gandhi continues to receive regular updates on national matters and is expected to resume her duties following discharge.
