Hyderabad: The Telangana Legislative Assembly on Monday unanimously approved five key bills, including those granting 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in education, state services, and local body elections. The session, chaired by Speaker Gaddam Prasadkumar, saw cross-party support for the legislation introduced by BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar.
The approved bills will now move to the Legislative Council and, upon clearance, will be sent to Parliament for final approval. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Centre to approve the 42% BC reservation and facilitate an all-party meeting on the matter.
Additional Bills Introduced
Apart from the BC reservation bills, the Assembly also introduced three more legislative measures:
- Potti Sriramulu Telugu University Amendment Bill-2025, presented by Health Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha.
- Telangana SC Classification Bill-2025
- Telangana Charitable and Hindu Religious Institutions Bill-2025
These bills will be discussed further on Tuesday.
Commitment to BC Welfare
CM Revanth Reddy reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ensuring justice for BCs, stating that increasing reservations in jobs, education, and governance is a priority. He credited Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra for advocating a caste census and promised continued efforts towards social justice.
