Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the interlinking of rivers to ensure every acre in the state receives irrigation water. Despite current financial challenges, Naidu emphasized the need to advance with river-interlinking initiatives, focusing on water conservation and improved irrigation access for agriculture.
During a water resources review meeting at the State Assembly, Naidu highlighted the success of the Pattiseema project, which linked the Godavari and Krishna rivers under a previous TDP government, providing water to thousands of acres. Now, the state’s attention has shifted toward further linking the Godavari, Krishna, and Pennar rivers. This includes plans to supply Godavari water to Rayalaseema, benefiting the drought-prone region.
Irrigation officials presented plans for interlinking the three rivers, as well as updates on the Polavaram project’s relief and rehabilitation (R&R) efforts. According to officials, 18,925 homes for displaced residents still need completion, and ₹155 crore remains unpaid to contractors from past projects. Given rising costs, contractors are hesitant to work at previous rates, prompting Naidu to suggest discussions for a viable resolution.
Naidu approved a ₹2,600 crore release for R&R works, pledging an upcoming visit to Polavaram to finalize schedules and oversee the project’s revival. The meeting also explored a new water policy for efficient resource management.
