On Wednesday, doctors in Hyderabad saved a 20 year old accident victim from Bidar. The doctors not only saved his life but also saved his arm from amputation.

The 20 year old was first taken to a local hospital where doctors advised them to take the patient to MaxCure Hospital in Hyderabad.

A pressure bandage was applied on all his injuries while he traveled from Bidar to Hyderabad.

By the time they arrived at the Madhapur Hospital, the patient’s condition was critical and the doctors rushed him in for surgery.

Dr. Satish Kumar, Head of the Emergency team at the hospital said, “ When he arrived, we found that his right upper limb was cold and there was no pulse. This was a threatening sign of limb ischemia, a condition where the blood supply to tissues is restricted causing a shortage of oxygen and glucose needed for cellular metabolism. This is important to keep the tissues alive, and he was bleeding actively from the injured site. His condition was serious when he arrived and we intervened at the right time.”

He further added, “Because of bleeding, his BP and hemoglobin was(sic) low. It was a very critical situation and we had to stabilize his condition.”

Dr. Shailesh Kumar Garge spoke of the patient’s condition, “ Considering his low BP and hemoglobin, open surgery would have been riskier and hence we had to perform internal bypass surgery. The surgery took 4.5 hours and was a high risk surgery considering the complications involved.”

The internal bypass surgery was done so the doctors could connect the two separated segments of the arm artery. The doctors used a covered stent to stop the blood leak that allowed normal flow in the forearm saving the patient’s life and his arm.
