On Monday, Hyderabad witnessed a heavy downpour that wreaked havoc in the city. The rain caused bumper to bumper traffic that lasted for nearly 5 hours and seven people lost their lives.
In Hyderabad and surrounding district of Telangana were affected by a sudden thunderstorm that collapsed weak buildings, crushed cars and crops destroyed.
Four people in Narayankhed town in Sangareddy died after being struck by lightning. They were identified as Shakunthala, 46, and Chandrakanth, 23, as well as Basamma, 45, and Ravi, 25.
The rain that began at 5 P.M., on Monday was measured at 13 centimeters that went on for nearly 5 hours. In Singadikunta a slum located in Banjara Hills, a 30 year old man died along with his four month old son after a wall collapsed on their hut. A 35 year old man, Afsar from old city died when a live wire fell on him.
The government has announced that Rs. 4 lakhs will be given to the next of kin of those who have died.
The GHMC’s emergency response teams evacuated 100 people from Singadikunta and 45 people from Krantinagar as the areas were submerged under water. Shivajinagar was also evacuated and GHMC brought out 28 people from the slums.
GHMC zonal Commissioner, S. Srinivas Reddy said, “We are providing food packets and water sachets to the people who were evacuated to safer areas till the water recedes in their localities.”
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a 48 hour warning to Hyderabad and nearby districts. The department has reported that Hyderabad will most likely see the same intensity of rain today and tomorrow.
