Musi River- New home for Diamonds

World's largest diamonds

Musi river, for Hyderabadis, is a synonym for heaps of garbage and the very representation of an open drain. But Geological Survey of India researchers said that there must be more to this river than just pollution.
The researchers said the River Musi from its origin in Ananthagiri hills, Vikarabad to its meeting point in Krishna might turn out to be a source of diamonds. Researchers till date, for diamond exploration, have concentrated on Krishna river from Mahbubnagar in Telangana to Jaggaiahpet in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. The course of Musi was never explored even though it is a part of the Krishna basin.

Diamond sites have been found in several areas of Mahabubnagar in recent past.

Professor G. Ramadass, a senior professor at the Centre for Exploration of Geophysics, Osmania University, and his team have now shifted their concentration to the course of the Musi for exploration.
According to these researchers, Musi, while flowing East takes a Southern turn in Nalgonda district. The meeting point of Musi and Krishna rivers is house to several diamond zones. The team, according to ”The Imperial Journal of Interdisciplinary research” has recently come across many new areas that hold diamonds.

Lamproites and kimberlites generally are a source for diamonds. These Lamproites are a type of volcanic and subvolcanic rocks while Kimberlites are igneous rocks. These rocks are in most of cases known for holding high karat diamonds. Researchers have found several sites around this conjunction area that possessed the same. The diamond holding rocks are at a depth of 1.2 km to 4.4 km according to magnetic readings. Most of these sites are located near the Musi River basin. Researchers hope that with this new discovery, more researchers will turn their attention to the Musi Basin.
In the past, several diamond sites have been discovered in Mahabubnagar area of Telangana, very well proving that there is more than meets the eye, to the Musi River.
