Six Manipal Institute of Technology Students Arrested

On Wednesday, the Karnataka Police arrested 6 Manipal Institute of Technology students for possessing and consuming drugs.

The accused have been identified as, Sathwik Mohanty (21,) Raghav Taneja (22,) Shivank Shekar (21,) Suyash Singh (20,) Madhav Chawhan (20) and Navareeth Kaur (25) a Malaysian physiotherapy intern.

The six students were arrested from separate blocks in Manipal and charged under section 21 (b) of the NDPS Act. The charges were placed after the students were medically examined.

On Saturday, the police received a tip off regarding drug and alcohol abuse by students on the campus.

Udupi Superintendent of Police Sanjeev M. Patil said, “The information about rampant drug abuse in colleges was brought to the notice of Udupi police during a phone in program on Saturday. Callers have been telling us about drug peddlers, but this time some callers gave us specific inputs which helped us crack the case.”

He further added, “We will carry out a thorough investigation to end drug abuse in colleges. We have formed teams and the drive will continue till Manipal is free from drug and alcohol abuse.”

The nature of substances consumed by the students is yet to be known as the police are waiting for the medical report.
