The Jalikattu competition of the season, 2023 started in Tamil Nadu on the 8th of January, Sunday.

On the first day of the event, approximately 22 people were injured in the State.  Jallikattu, the famous bull taming sport, also known as ‘Manju Virattu’ has been part of the Pongal celebrations of Tamil Nadu for ages.  The villages specially breed the bulls for the event, where many villagers take part and celebrate the event.

It is mainly the Temple bulls that take part in this event, continuing the bull baiting tradition among the ancient tribes that especially lived in the ‘Mullai’ region of the State.  Emerging over time and evolving, it became a sport for showing off bravery and also for entertainment prize money, which was introduced to the winners.

The first event of Jallikattu was taken place in Thatchankurichi in the Pudukottai region.  In addition, two other events of Jallikattu would be organised in Avaniapuram in Madurai and Palamedu on the 15th of January and the 16th of January.

However, the grand and large event of Jallikattu, which would witness 350 bulls and 250 bull tamers would be held on the 17th of January.
