Amaravati: Minister Nara Lokesh, known for his admiration for Mangalagiri handloom artisans, has emerged as a passionate promoter of this traditional craft. Along with his wife Brahmani and mother Bhuvaneshwari, Lokesh has become an unofficial brand ambassador for Mangalagiri handlooms, showcasing them on prominent occasions and supporting the weavers’ community.
During the recent convocation program at AIIMS Amaravati, President Droupadi Murmu was honored with a handcrafted Mangalagiri shawl, symbolizing the region’s rich textile heritage. Previously, Lokesh has presented these exquisite shawls to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other dignitaries, emphasizing their cultural significance.
Brahmani and Bhuvaneshwari have also actively promoted Mangalagiri handlooms by donning sarees made by local weavers at various events. Minister Lokesh’s efforts go beyond symbolic gestures; while in opposition, he established a weavers’ hall in Mangalagiri and facilitated a partnership with Tata Taneira to market handloom products, boosting the weavers’ livelihood.
Lokesh remains committed to reviving the dying Mangalagiri handloom industry, blending tradition with modern marketing strategies to ensure its sustainability. His dedication highlights the importance of preserving Andhra Pradesh’s cultural identity through active support of its artisans.
