Hyderabad: The Telangana government is set to waive loans amounting to more than ₹50 crore for handloom unions and workers, as directed by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. The loan waiver will cover the period from April 1, 2017, to March 31, 2023. The State Handloom Department has already instructed Assistant Directors across districts to gather detailed loan information to facilitate the waiver process.

During a recent inauguration of the National Institute of Handloom Technology (NIHIT) in Hyderabad, CM Revanth Reddy announced the loan waiver for handloom workers, similar to the relief provided to farmers. Handloom workers claim that they owe loans of up to ₹30 crore, which they hope will be cleared under this scheme.

The move follows a precedent set by the previous government, which waived loans taken by handloom workers up until March 31, 2017. The current administration aims to extend this relief, benefiting the 259 handloom societies and over 17,000 looms in the state, with a loan limit of ₹75,000 per cooperative society.

While personal loans have not been included in the current request for information, district officers have sought clarification on whether these should also be considered.
