In a big move, the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Society housed in Teen Murti Bhavan premises, has been renamed as Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library Society.
The Union Culture Ministry confirmed the renaming after holding a meeting with the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) Society. The meeting was presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who is the vice president of the Society. Mr. Rajnath Singh welcomed the name change and said, “Welcome the proposal for change in name.” Describing prime ministers as an institution and comparing the journey of various prime ministers to the varied colors of a rainbow, Singh emphasized that “all the colors of a rainbow have to be proportionately represented in order to make it beautiful.”
Mr. Rajnath Singh further said the new name would be a tribute and pay respect to all the PMs of India.
The rename announcement on the 16th of June, prompted sharp reactions from the Indian National Congress. Jairam Ramesh, the spokesperson of the INC said, “Pettiness & Vengeance, thy name is Modi. For over 59 years the Nehru Memorial Museum & Library (NMML) has been a global intellectual landmark and treasure house of books & archives. It will henceforth be called Prime Ministers Museum & Society. What won’t Mr. Modi do to distort, disparage and destroy the name & legacy of the architect of the Indian nation-state. A small, small man overburdened by his insecurities is the self-styled Vishwaguru.”
It is to be noted, the Murti Bhavan was the official residence of the first Prime Minister of India Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru.
