An appeals court acquitted the powerful politician in southern India of corruption charges earlier this month, clearing the way for her to return to public office. From the time of the Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa’s death, controversies having been doing the rounds about the reason behind her death. In an attempt to take out these doubts the Tamil Nadu State Government released the medical reports by the experts at All India Institute of Medical Sciences’ (AIIMS), Delhi and also the discharge summary of Apollo Hospital in Chennai.

The report was released 48 hours ahead of the protest planned by rebel leader O. Panneerselvam, who sought an investigation into Jayalalithaa’s death. Health secretary J. Radhakrishnan, speaking to the media said the Government decided to make reports public “given the need to put to rest needless speculation relating to the circumstances surrounding [Jayalalithaa’s] hospitalization, treatment, and sad demise.”

The main goal of the government to put to rest the two rumors doing the rounds about Amma’s death. The rumors said that Jayalalithaa was given wrong drugs before being admitted to hospital on September 22 and that she faced trauma before being taken to the hospital. To address the ‘insinuation’ of wrong drugs, Radhakrishnan pointed out that except for corticosteroids prescribed for a skin condition, she only took medicines for diabetes and hypertension.

He said, “Clearly, the treatment report of Apollo Hospitals and AIIMS does not mention evidence of trauma or any other event as alleged by certain political leaders.” He also added about her life support that “All of them understood the situation and asked the medical team to act as per the standard protocol.”

It was also revealed that after the experts came to the conclusion that it was futile to continue life support, those including Panneerselvam, the life support was removed after giving full information.
