In a major boost to the Indian Disaster management, the Union Minister for Home Affairs announced a huge scheme.

On the 13th of June, Tuesday, Mr. Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, has announced three major schemes for disaster management worth over Rs 8000 crores.

According to the sources, a total of Rs 5,000 crores project to expand and modernise fire services in states, Rs 2,500 crores project for the seven most populous metros – Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Pune.  The amount would be used to work on projects, helping to reduce the risk of urban flooding.

In addition, an amount of Rs. 825 crores National Landslide Risk Mitigation Scheme in 17 States and Union Territories for landslide mitigation.

Mr. Amit Shah said, “In the last nine years, the Central Govt and States have achieved a lot in this area. Nobody can deny it. But we can’t stay content because disasters have changed their form and their frequency & intensity have increased. We will have to do more extensive planning…” He further said, “IMD can now issue an alert five days ahead of any upcoming flood or rain. We have asked them to try and make it seven days.”

The major announcement came after Mr. Amit Shah chaired a high level meeting over the cyclone Biparjoy.
