The whole of Thursday and even Friday a hashtag called BlockNarendraModi has been trending on Twitter. The hashtag was created after a number of the people the Prime Minister followed on the social media site posted disrespectful Tweets regarding the journalist Gauri Lankesh.

Gauri Lankesh the 55 year old journalist from Karnataka was murdered on Tuesday night at her home in Bengaluru. Lankesh was known for her right wing Hindutva ideology and was shot multiple times by unidentified attackers.

Ever since this incident, people have raised their voice against this murder and are demanding immediate action.

The hashtag began trending after people like Nikhil Dadhich, who is followed by the prime minister, Tweeting that the journalist deserved to die and used abusive language as well.

Some of the Twitter handles followed by Modi called Gauri Lankesh a “Naxal sympathizer” with abusive language.

The prime minister stayed quiet on the matter and refused to address it. BJP’s National Head for Information and Technology, Amit Malviya defended his political party and the prime minister and said, “PM following someone is not a character certificate of the person, and is not in any way a guarantee of how the person would conduct himself.”

The hashtag continued to trend throughout the day with a number of Twitter pages posting a screenshot of Narendra Modi’s page being blocked.
