The Maharashtra Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) couple Ms. Navneet Rana and her husband Mr. Ravi Rana was granted bail on the 4th of May.
The Bombay High Court granted bail to the couple, who were arrested for threatening to chant “Hanuman Chalisa” outside the residence of Mr. Uddhav Thackeray, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The duo was booked under IPC Sec 124A (sedition) and Sec 153A (promoting enmity between different groups). Another FIR has also been registered against them under IPC Sec 353 (assault or criminal force on public servants to deter them from performing duty).
The couple was arrested on the 23rd of April and was produced before a magistrate court in Bandra the next day. The court announced judicial custody of the couple with the police in Arthur Road Jail, Mumbai.
However, after 10 days of judicial custody, the Bombay HC granted the bail, after reviewing their bail plea. In the plea, the couple said their arrest is illegal and had been done only under political pressure. The couple furthermore demanded to quash the case against them. After the matter was heard, the court allowed the couple’s release and asked them not to address the media over the matter. The court also asked the couple to be available for investigation 24X7.
