The Central Government, on the 30th of December, Thursday, announced an extension of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958 (AFSPA) for six months.

In an official notification, the Central Government declared Nagaland as a ‘disturbed and dangerous’ region, due to which it extended the AFSPA. The notification issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs read, “whereas the Central Government is of the opinion that the area comprising the whole state of Nagaland is in such a disturbed and dangerous condition that use of armed forces in aid of civil power is necessary.” It further read, “Now, therefore, in exercise of powers conferred by Section 3 of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, the Central Government hereby declares that the whole of the state of Nagaland to be ‘disturbed area’ for a period of six months with effect from December 30, 2021 for the purpose of the said Act.” Mr. Piyush Goyal, the Additional Secretary to the Union Home Ministry, issued the notification.

Notably, the decision of the Government of India is in the view of recent killings of civilians, following which the citizens staged several protests.

After the armed forces of Nagaland killed 13 civilians in Mon district, by mistake, the whole state came together, demanding repeal of AFSPA. The protests created a ruckus and tension in the State. Later, considering the situation, the Union Government even formed a committee of Indian Army members to investigate the killings and submit a report on withdrawal of the AFSPA, in the next 45 days, by February 2022.

However, instead of repealing the AFSPA in Nagaland, the Central Government extended it for the next six months.
