Ranjan Gogoi, the Chief Justice of India (CJI,) on the 31st of July, raised a question to the Supreme Court Registry regarding a letter written to him.
Gogoi said, “This morning I read in the papers that the Unnao victim had written to the SC. I was informed about the letter yesterday (Tuesday). I have not yet seen the letter. It is yet to be placed before me. We try to do something constructive in the midst of this highly destructive volatile environment and this happens.”
The Unnao rape case survivor and her family wrote a letter to the CJI and informed him about the threat and danger they have from the accused, Kuldeep Singh Sengar.
In 2017, Kuldeep Singh Sengar, a lawmaker of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) raped the girl, who was a resident of Unnao, Uttar Pradesh.
In the letter, the family narrated a few incidents, where some unidentified people, allegedly related to Sengar, threatened the victim’s family, stating there would be dire consequences if the family continued fighting the case against Sengar.
Later, on the 28th of July, the teen, with her family members, met with an accident on her way to Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh.
The girl is admitted to a hospital and is undergoing treatment. Her condition is said to be critical as she sustained serious injuries. Two of her aunts died on the spot.
The matter came to light after a media source wrote about the letter, which was sent to the CJI a week before the Unnao rape case survivor met with the accident.
Although the Raebareli Police said the incident was an accident, the victim’s mother alleged the accident was planned and asked for a Central Bureau Investigation (CBI) probe regarding the same.
On the other hand, Kuldeep is in jail, serving imprisonment for raping the girl. He was also suspended from the BJP in Uttar Pradesh in 2018.
The letter finally reached the CJI on the 30th of July, following which, he took action and asked the SC’s Secretary General to prepare a note of it and place it before him.
The letter was written on the 12th of July in Hindi by the rape victim and her two family members and was sent to the Allahabad High Court as well as other authorities of the Uttar Pradesh Government.
