Priyanka Gandhi, the General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) Uttar Pradesh East, raised questions against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding the Unnao rape victim’s accident.

Ms. Gandhi said, “So a woman is allegedly raped by a BJP MLA. Her father is beaten up and dies in custody. A key witness dies mysteriously last year. Now her aunt who was also a witness is killed and her lawyer is critically injured in an accident caused by a truck with blackened number plates.”

On the 28th of July, the 15 year old teen, who was raped by Kuldeep Singh Sengar in 2017, met with an accident in Raebareli and sustained serious injuries. There were 4 people in the car, the teenage girl, her two aunts and her lawyer. While the aunts died on the spot, the girl and the lawyer were seriously injured and are undergoing treatment at a hospital.

The accident took place at 1:00 P.M., on the 28th of July, when they were travelling to the Raebareli District Jail to meet her uncle.

Rajiv Krishna, a senior police officer, addressed the media and said, “Two women were injured and two have died in the accident. We’ll conduct a forensic investigation of the truck and the number of plates.”

On the 29th of July, the mother of the teenage girl accused Kuldeep Singh Sengar for the accident and said the family wants the Central Bureau Investigation (CBI) to investigate the case.

In 2017, Kuldeep Singh Sengar, a lawmaker of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) allegedly raped the 15 year old girl at his residence in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh. Later, in 2018, the CBI investigated the case and found Kuldeep guilty and since then, he is in prison, serving his jail term.

The mother of the victim told reporters, “I have got to know that the lawmaker got it done. He is inside… he has a phone inside (the jail). He is doing everything sitting inside the jail.” She further added, “Sengar is in jail but his men aren’t. He and his men were threatening us… We want justice (sic.)”

The accident got a political face with criticism and allegations against the BJP. The Parliament session was also adjourned till noon after the Indian National Congress (INC) and other opposition parties started protesting against the BJP for the incident.

The family of the victim asked the police, who called the incident an accident, why the number plate of the truck was blackened if it was not a planned accident.

On the other hand, the victim’s family also demanded a CBI probe in the matter.

The police initiated an investigation and said, “Every angle is being investigated, but prima facie, it appears to be an accident.”

When asked about why the police protection provided to the girl was not with her at the time of the accident, M.P. Verma, a senior police officer, said, “Our information suggests the security wasn’t with them today, it seems they refused it.”

The police also said they would also look into why the girl did not have police protection at the time of the accident.

An investigation is underway.

Stay tuned for further updates.
