Om Birla Calls for Joint Statement at BRICS Parliamentary Forum

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has called for a joint statement at the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum, which India will host on October 26 and 27.

The meeting will bring together parliamentary leaders from BRICS member and partner countries, including Russia, Iran, China, Brazil and the UAE.

Birla said the forum would focus on people-centred development, artificial intelligence (AI) and global governance. Leaders are expected to discuss how Parliaments can strengthen public institutions, support useful technology and help build a fairer global system.

A meeting of delegation secretaries is scheduled for October 25 to prepare the joint statement. Birla expressed hope that all participating countries would agree on a common declaration.

The forum will also include talks between visiting leaders and parliamentary groups. A special meeting of international affairs committee chairs will discuss parliamentary diplomacy, training and the sharing of good practices.

The main theme of the forum is “Strengthening Parliaments for People-Centric Development.” A cultural programme is also planned.
