PM Modi and Canadian PM Carney Push India-Canada Trade Deal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have agreed to speed up talks on a trade deal between India and Canada. The two leaders discussed trade, energy, technology, security and defence during a phone call on Tuesday, October 13.

Both leaders stressed the need to complete negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) as soon as possible. The agreement aims to strengthen economic ties and support efforts to double trade between the two countries by 2030.

PM Modi said both nations should build on the recent progress in their relationship and work towards better cooperation in key areas.

Meanwhile, Canadian International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu and Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand are visiting India to advance talks on trade and other shared priorities.

The leaders also discussed security cooperation and challenges facing the Indo-Pacific region. They agreed to stay in touch ahead of  PM Modi’s planned visit to Canada in December 2026.

The renewed talks mark another step towards stronger ties between the two countries.
