Telangana Releases Funds to Boost Urban Development

The Telangana government has released ₹296.6 crore to urban local bodies, helping the state access ₹1,483 crore in performance grants under the 16th Finance Commission guidelines.

The Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department issued the order on Tuesday, October 13. The money will go directly to the concerned municipalities and the Secunderabad Cantonment Board.

The state released this amount as a matching grant. This means the government contributed funds to meet a requirement for accessing the larger grant amount.

The funds are expected to support the development of towns and smaller cities across Telangana.

Separately, a Union government screening committee approved a proposal on October 9 for ₹5,000 crore in financial assistance from Germany’s development bank, KfW. The funding is proposed for the Telangana Climate Resilient Urban Transformation Initiative.

The wider programme is estimated to cost ₹7,143 crore. It aims to improve urban services, including water supply, drainage, waste management and the upkeep of water bodies.

One major part of the plan is a sewerage and wastewater management project for the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation, estimated to cost around ₹5,257 crore.
