The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP,) the ruling Government of Delhi passed a resolution against the National Population Register (NPR) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC.)
On the 13th of March, the AAP conducted a special Delhi Assembly session and passed a resolution against the NPR and NRC. Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, passed the resolution after 61 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) denied to have their birth certificates.
Arvind Kejriwal said, “Me, my wife, my entire cabinet don’t have birth certificates to prove citizenship. Will we be sent to detention centres?”
Mr. Kejriwal said, “61 out of 70 members in the Delhi Assembly don’t have birth certificates. Will they also be sent to detention centres?” He further added, “I urge the centre to withdraw National Population Register and National Register of Citizens.”
Arvind Kejriwal also challenged the Union ministers to show their birth certificates to prove their citizenship.
The Central Government recently announced to conduct NPR in India. However, Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister said the implementation of the NPR and NRC does not mean people need to show their birth certificates, but is a process to have data to cout national population.
According to sources, the 2020 NPR includes parents’ birthplace, date of birth, a person’s present and permanent address, mother tongue and nationality only.
Delhi became the 7th State to pass resolution against the NPR and the NRC. Previously, states like Bihar, Rajasthan, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Chhattisgarh.
