On the 24th of January, Monday, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) led Delhi Government announced to reduce dry days in the National Capital.
According to the Arvind Kejriwal Government, dry days would be on the 15th of August, the 26th of January and on the 2nd of October, which are Independence Day, Republic Day and Gandhi Jayanti, respectively. The decision was taken under the new Excise Policy by the Delhi Government.
However, the opposition, the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) opposed the decision and criticized the AAP Government for reducing the number of dry days from 21 to only 3 in 2022.
Meanwhile, as per the new policy, the imposed dry days would be applicable on bars and pubs serving liquor in the City. However, the new policy would not be applicable to hotels, having L-15 licenses. According to sources, those having L-15 licenses are allowed to serve liquor to their guests in hotels as room services.
The released order read, “In pursuance of the provisions of Rule 52 of Delhi Excise Rules, 2010, it is hereby ordered that the following dates shall be observed as “Dry Day” in the National Capital Territory of Delhi by all the licensees of the Excise department and opium vends located in Delhi for the year 2022.” However it further clarified that the order issued could add more dry days, apart from these three, from time to time.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Government announced the legal age of drinking to be 21 years old from the previous 25 years old.
