Earthquake rocks North-East India

On Tuesday afternoon a mild earthquake rocked the Northeastern region and adjoining Bangladesh. The Central Seismological Observatory in Shillong noted that the magnitude at 5.7 on the Richter scale.

The tremors were felt for five to six seconds that occurred at 2:39 P.M. The epicenter was located in Dhalai district of Tripura, close to Mizoram and Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh. The official of CSO said, “The exact location of the epicenter has been put at Latitude 24.1* North and Longitude 91.1* East, and had a depth of 28 km.”

The tremors were mainly felt strongly in Tripura including its capital Agartala and also surrounding states of Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram and southern Assam. There were no reports of any casualties or property damage. Scared people ran out of their homes and shops as tremors ran through the region. People reported that it was the second strongest quake they felt till date.

On January 4, 2016, an earthquake of the magnitude of 6.7 on the Richter scale rocked the entire north-east region. The epicenter of the quake in 2016 was Noney of Tamenglong in Manipur. There were seven casualties and huge property loss in Manipur.
