Election Commission Orders Probe Into Fake Voter IDs In Bengaluru

On Tuesday night, the Elections Commission (EC) ordered a probe into the 10,000 voter ID cards found in a Bengaluru apartment. The BJP has alleged the apartment belongs to a Congress lawmaker.

They further demanded the Raja Rajeshwari Nagar Constituency elections be canceled due to this discovery. However, the Congress lashed back at the BJP and stated the ruling party planted the fake evidence.

Karnataka’s Chief Electoral Officer Sanjiv Kumar addressed a press conference at midnight. He explained two truckloads of counterfoil strips were discovered. These were the acknowledgment slips used to add names of the voters.

However, he also stated there were not the same slips provided by the Election Commission. Mr. Kumar said, “In next 24 hours we will get to know more facts based on which a firm decision will be taken.”

Union Minister Prakash Javadekar attacked the Congress in a tweet that read, “BJP demands countermanding of elections in AC 154 Raj Rajeshwari Nagar in light of latest revelations of tens of thousands of fake voter ID and empty packets of hard currency. This is Congress conspiracy to rig election, in face of their imminent defeat.”

The Raja Rajeshwari Nagar Constituency is among the largest in Bengaluru with over 4.71 lakh voters. This year the Congress Minister Munirathna is hoping to keep his seat from 2013 against the BJP candidate Muniraju Gowda. The elections in Karnataka will be held on the 12th of May and the results will be out on the 15th of the same month.
