On Thursday, Banaras Hindu University hired its first female chief proctor. O. N. Singh, the former Proctor refused to accept moral responsibility for the harassment of an Arts student, resigned and Assistant Professor Royana Singh was given the post.

A senior BHU official said, “Royana Singh, an assistant professor at the Institute of Medical Science (Anatomy Department,) has been appointed as chief proctor. She is the first woman in the varsity’s history to hold the post and also heads the women’s grievance cell of the University.”

A press conference was conducted where Singh said, “I was away when the incident took place. I have zero tolerance towards such acts and will ensure nothing like this is repeated on the campus.”

The students rioted on Saturday to protest the molestation of a female student. This riot led to many female students being injured by police in a baton charge. The new Proctor said she was ashamed about the incident and announced the new changes that will be made to avoid such mishaps. Singh said 200 female guards would be employed along with new CCTV cameras to cover more area of the campus.

She was quoted saying, “I will be in touch with wardens and teachers, and wardens will be told to constantly interact with students so that we get to know of a problem at the start. But there is no gender discrimination on campus. I can say this with certainty.”
