Gurgaon: The capital on Tuesday morning inaugurated the first Car-Free Tuesday. The police Commissioner, Navdeep Singh Virik riding a bicycle on an empty roads at the city where mile-long jams are the norm. And this was rush hour.
“We are motivating people to car pool or cycle to work. We have ensured 400 extra private buses, more rapid metro trips and want to see if we can cut down on our car usage,” said Mr Virk, as other policemen too rode bicycles.
On the occasion of World Car-Free Day, September 22, the city has started it in unique way by taking a pledge that every Tuesday between 7 am and 7 pm, it will not bring out in cars to combat both air pollution and bottleneck traffic jams.
The CEOs and the people who travel by cars daily are seen either cycling to work or have used office transport this morning. “We told our employees that it was alright if they got a bit late today. Gradually, maybe, this process will get smoother,” Nagaroo CEO Manas Fuloria said. Employees were encouraged to come by public transports, metros etc. This is done in order to cut down the pollution and avoid traffic jams. The idea behind this is to continue this on every Tuesday.
