IMD Announces Orange Alert In Delhi NCR After Heavy Rains Continue

The National Capital Region (NCR) witnesses heavy rain and waterlogged situation after continuous rainfall since the past two days.

On the 20th of August, Delhi NCR reported waterlogging at several stretches leading to heavy traffic.

Some of the stretches where waterlogging has been reported are Burfkhana Chowk in north Delhi, Mehrauli-Badarpur Road at Pul Prehaldpur, and at least four stretches of the GT Road.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) at 5:00 A.M., on the 20th of August announced an Orange alert in the region.   Places with moderate rainfall and heavy thunder storm are under alert.  The Delhi Government and concerned authorities are prepared to tackle the impact of heavy rainfall like drain blockage, waterlogging, traffic and vehicle accidents.

Kuldeep Srivastava, the Head of the Regional Weather Forecast Department of the IMD said, “ After Thursday the intensity of rainfall will decrease.  Delhi is in for a spell of light rain till August 25.  The monsoon trough is passing through the Capital.”

The IMD also said, “Most parts of the city are likely to see moderate rain from Tuesday with some locations recording heavy rain too. This will continue till Thursday, with light rain expected on Friday. There is a chance Delhi’s overall rain could even touch the surplus range by Friday (the 21st of August.)”

This year Delhi NCR recorded338.4mm of rainfall against the normal mark of 395.1mm.
