The Indian National Congress (INC,) on the 20th of August, paid tribute to late Rajiv Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India, on his 76th birth anniversary.
Senior INC leaders Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Dr. Manmohan Singh visited Veer Bhumi, the memorial of late Rajiv Gandhi in Delhi and paid their respects.
This year due to the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19, the INC did not organise a grand celebration in Delhi.
Rahul Gandhi, the former President of the INC, took to Twitter and remembered Rajiv Gandhi on the occasion. He said, “Rajiv Gandhi was a man with a tremendous vision, far ahead of his times. But above all else, he was a compassionate and loving human being.
I am incredibly lucky and proud to have him as my father.
We miss him today and everyday.”
Rajiv Gandhi served as the Prime Minister of India after the assassination of his mother and the former Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi between 1984 to 1989. He assumed office at the age of 40 to become the youngest individual as the Prime Minister of India.
He served as the PM till the 2nd of 1989.
In May 1991, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber, while campaigning in Tamil Nadu’s Sriperumbudur area.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took to Twitter and paid his tribute to Rajiv Gandhi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and said, “On his birth anniversary, tributes to former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji.”
