India Responds to JD Vance’s Remarks on Indian Professionals

India has criticised US Vice President JD Vance for his comments about foreign workers, saying his words overlook the contributions of Indian professionals to the American economy.

On October 9, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) called the remarks “unwarranted” and “deeply offensive”. Vance had criticised companies for using foreign workers instead of American employees during comments on US visa rules.

The response came after the US government suspended applications under the Permanent Labour Certification (PERM) programme for eight technology companies. These include Indian firms Infosys, TCS, Wipro and HCL Technologies, along with Microsoft, Adobe, Cognizant and Capgemini.

The PERM programme is part of the process that allows companies to sponsor eligible foreign workers for US permanent residency, also known as a Green Card.

India clarified that the suspension does not automatically affect existing H-1B visas or the status of their holders and dependents. However, it could affect Green Card applications for eligible employees of the companies involved.

The MEA also said skilled workers benefit both countries by supporting research, innovation, productivity and job creation.
